Match Report | Bedworth United U18s Juniors v Rugby Borough

Bedworth United 0–1 Rugby Borough

A frustrating evening for the young Greenbacks, who were unable to find their rhythm or build any real momentum in a game that ultimately slipped away from us.

Bedworth started brightly, creating a couple of early opportunities, with Endersby coming closest as his effort struck the post. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalise on that promising start and turn our chances into a goal.

Rugby Borough were largely restricted to long-range efforts and a couple of dangerous crosses, with the Bedworth back line feeling relatively comfortable dealing with the threat. However, it would be the visitors who broke the deadlock in the first half. A half-hearted effort towards goal took a series of deflections through a crowd of bodies before somehow finding its way past the Bedworth goalkeeper. A disappointing goal to concede, but that’s football.

At half-time, we made changes in an attempt to inject some energy and creativity into our play. Goodman and Griffin entered the action, both bringing grit and determination. Goodman looked to stretch the opposition’s back line, while Griffin provided an option to carry the ball and drive forward through the middle of the park.

The Greenbacks continued to push for an equaliser, with Endersby going agonisingly close once again, sending a cross into the back of the net’s direction but narrowly over the bar. Perry also came close, just failing to hit the target with a close-range header.

Perry then found himself with a fantastic opportunity to break forward and put the Rugby Borough goalkeeper under pressure, only to be brought down in what appeared to be a last-man challenge. With his pace carrying him towards goal, there was real frustration and disbelief from the Bedworth bench when only a yellow card was shown for what looked to be a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.

We continued to throw men forward until the final whistle, leaving ourselves exposed to the counter-attack, but at that stage of the game, the risk was justified as we searched for a way back into the contest.

Ultimately, we lacked the quality and composure in the final third to turn our pressure into goals. These things happen in football, but we cannot afford to gift the opposition a goal at the other end, particularly in a game where chances were at a premium.

A hugely frustrating result, and one we are all disappointed with. We know we had enough in the game to take something from it, but tonight it wasn’t to be.

We dust ourselves off, learn from it and go again. The focus now turns to the next one.
