Bedworth United U18s Youth team carried on from where they left off last week in their quest for the Ray Mercer Memorial Shield. They hosted a stong Stratford Town side on Wednesday night and ran out 2-0 winners. The game was a hard fought encounter with both teams looking to play football from the start. The early exchanges were pretty equal with neither team really troubling the oppositions goal. It was Bedworth though who broke the deadlock after some neat play down the left from Chris Jones to square the ball for Warwick Hurst to calmly side foot into the right hand corner, giving the home team the advantage. Bedworth doubled their lead before the break when Cameron Dunne was fouled in the box which he stepped up to convert the penalty to send the home side in 2 goals to the good at half time.
The second half started much the same as the first, but slowly the game become broken up with the referees whistle. Stratford were lucky on 2 occasions that the referee was lenient and only booked 2 of their players for raising their hands when it could have easily been red. Stratford tried to rally towards the end of the game to get something back but the Bedworth lads stood firm to deny the visitors any clear cut chances.
Lee Hurst speaking after the game said ” same as last week its pleasing to get the result but this week more so as we controlled the game well and saw out the game without any major scares and its always nice to get a clean sheet at any level of football. Its great that the league have organised this competition as it keeps the lads playing competitive football rather than friendlies after the restart. I believe that the team can do well in this competition so long as they take each game as it comes and not look to far forward, Having beaten both Rugby Town and Stratford Town who are Premier Division teams, we now have to maintain our concentration and not get to complacent against the remaining 3 teams in the group, but overall a very pleasing couple of weeks football.
The Youth team host Coventry United on Wednesday night next week and will be looking to make it 3 out of 3 and take a big step towards the knock out stages.
