U21 Going for Glory

This weekend the U21s will be looking to secure the Eastern Division title against Rushden and Diamonds.  A victory on Saturday will make sure that they are not able to be caught.  With Loughborough already finished their season a point for the boys in green will take them above them and into first place.  Nuneaton Borough still have 3 games to play and could still match The Greenbacks if Bedworth draw on Saturday.  A draw would mean that the celebrations would have to be put on hold until Nuneaton either drop points or play their remaining 3 games but the noisy neighbours would still need a 27 goal turnaround in the 3 games to better Bedworths tally.

Rushden will be no push overs though and they themselves will be looking to finish as high as they can and will be looking to gain points to make sure that they finish in the top half of the table.  In the reverse fixture back in September The Greenbacks went down 3-0 so will be looking to avenge that defeat as well as top the table.

If the U21’s win their league they will go into a Champions of Champions playoff with the winners of the South West Division which is between Halesowen U21 and Stourport Swifts U21. Halesowen Look the more lightly only needing 1 point from their last 2 matches.  They will be joined by either Lichfield City U21 or Rushall Olympic U21 from the North West Division.  On paper it looks like Rushall as they only need 4 points from their remaining 4 games to top that division.

The Champion of Champions tournament will be the following format.  The 2 teams from the 3 Divisions with the lowest average points per game will play a semi final at the ground of the team out of the 2 of them with the highest points per game. The winner of the semi final will then go on to face the team with the highest points per game in the Champion of Champions final.

U21 Manager Kev Burke commented “Its been a tough season with a lot of close games and for us to be in this position with everything in our own hands with a game to play is a testament to how well the lads have played. This is a young squad with the potential to go on and develop further in a league as competitive as this one has been all season they have shown great character to bounce back after some of the defeats we have suffered and have shown amazing resilience to get themselves in the position we are in.  No matter what happens Saturday I am proud of all of the lads that have represented the U21s this season which I hope continues for 2 more games after this one.  Our home form has been good so if we can take that confidence into this last game we stand a good chance of victory.  Can I please ask anyone that is free on Saturday please come and support the lads and give them that extra encouragement to hopefully top this Division”
