Bedworth hosted Cambridge City for the first game of 2022 here at The OVAL. The Greenbacks were on a good run of form going into the game having been 7 unbeaten a run that lifted them into the top half of the table and with some supporters starting to believe that the playoffs are now a possibility come May. Cambridge were coming into the game on the back of 2 victories over the Christmas period against Histon and Soham Town.
The game started off quiet even with both teams having their share of possession but neither team could find that final ball to create any goal scoring opportunities. Bedworth forced a number of corners and it was from one of them corners that Elliott Parrott was hauled to the ground, without hesitation the referee pointed to the spot Ryan Nesbitt stepped up and confidently sent Daniel George the wrong way and fired Bedworth into a 1 nil lead. Cambridge were spurred on by conceding and for the remainder of the half had the majority of possession but Elliott Parrott and Kyle Barnett ably assisted by Luke Rowe and Ryan Moore protected the Bedworth goal and repelled most of Cambridge’s aerial bombardment. Half time whistle came with Stuart Storer breathing a sigh of relief that the lead remained intact.

Cambridge came out early for the second half and definitely had the bit between their teeth and when the half did start they continued where they left off with the majority of possession but still not able to break down Bedworth’s resolute defence. It was Bedworth who doubled their lead on one of their rare breaks into the Cambridge half on 56 minutes. Jorrin John picked up the ball on the left hand side and laid the ball off to Liam Lockett who took a touch to his right set himself and let fly from fully 30 yards and then watched as his shot sailed into the roof of the net to double Bedworth’s lead. Cambridge again rallied and kept pinning Bedworth back and on 64 minutes halved the deficit when a corner was swung in from the right a scramble ensued and it was Jarid Robson who was the quickest to react and prodded the ball home from inside the six yard box. Cambridge sensed that there was something in this game for them and kept the pressure on. Cambridge were again lifted when the central defensive partnership of Barnett and Parrott that had prevented them from getting any real goal scoring opportunities was split up when Elliott Parrott had to be withdrawn after a stray elbow to the face. It was with 3 minutes left that Cambridge got their equaliser when Davis broke down the Bedworth right and crossed low into the box for Robson again to prod home from close range. Both teams had half chances in added on time but neither could get the winning goal.
