Full Time

Bedworth hosted 5th in the table Belper town looking to extend their unbeaten record to 11 games and gain some sort of revenge for the 5-0 defeat away earlier in the season.

The game started off and within minutes you could see that the game was going to be a contrast of 2 styles, with Bedworth looking to play and the visitors looking to play the long ball and win with physicality.  This contrast in styles was also going to cause issues for the officials as in the first 20 minutes the referees whistle was heard so often its a wonder that those in attendance didn’t go home with the sound of it still ringing in their ears. Jorrin John had the afternoon’s first serious effort on goal for the Greenbacks in the 7th minute with a flashing drive that went over the crossbar. It was the visitors that created the next opening when Alex Peterson turned the ball invitingly across the six yard area, but there wasn’t a yellow shirt to take advantage.  After that though goal scoring opportunities were few and far between with the Greenbacks having good possession but no real penetration in the final third.  Sam Muggletons long throws were causing havoc in the Belper penalty area but unfortunately for Bedworth the ensuing scrambles didn’t fall to a green shirt to get a shot away.  On 34 minutes Josh Woodcock was shown a straight red for a lunging late tackle on John which left the Bedworth man with some impressive stud marks down his thigh.  The rest of the first half resembled more of a Royal Rumble with an occasional bit of football with X rated tackles going in all over the place and again the referees whistle was heard to ring out more than anything else. Just before the break with the referee dealing with another incident behind his back the Belper skipper decided it was acceptable to headbutt Muggleton luckily for him his cowardly act was not seen by the officials had it been he no doubt would have joined Woodcock back in the dressing room. As the referee blew for half time there was again an altercation in the tunnel involving the Belper captain which again was out of view of the match officials.

Half Time Bedworth United 0 Belper Town 0

Half time seemed to calm the players down a bit and with 4 minutes of the restart Richard Blythe nearly caught out Belper keeper Lewis Gwilliams with a header that hit the post, 3 minutes later though the Greenbacks found themselves behind when of all people South who was lucky to still be on the pitch this time used his head to nod on a Nelthorpe free kick and Peterson was first to the ball and managed to squeeze it under Sam Lomax to score. John should have grabbed a quick equaliser in the 57th minute when with plenty of time to place his shot, he pulled the ball wide of the far post, however he made amends for in the 64th minute when cross come shot drifted over Gwilliams to go in off the upright to equal the score.  Bedworth were in the ascendancy with a man extra and buoyed by the equaliser and were pushing forward looking for the winner when Belper broke after a Bedworth attack broke down Muggleton already on a yellow held back a Belper player as he looked to get away which gave the referee no choice to but produce a second yellow for the Bedworth man.  With the Belper bench becoming more and more irate eventually the officials had heard enough and sent Belpers Assistant manager Mick Norbury to the stands. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Belpers Karl Demidh stroked the ball just inside the far post for what would turn out to be the winning goal. The hosts then stepped up their efforts for an equaliser but try as they might they could not find the goal to keep their unbeaten run on track.
