Midway point of the season catch up

I caught up with Manager Stu Storer and his coaching staff Jamie Lenton and Andy Penny and as its the midway point of the season put a few questions to them.  Read on to see what their responses were.

       1. Best performance of the season so far?

Ilkeston at The OVAL in the FA Trophy after a tough season last time out this was the turning point for me where the players started to believe in themselves again.  I put the poor start down to a hangover from the season before where confidence was low and I feel now that we have through hard work in training got the players starting to believe in their own quality again.

  2. Worst performance of the season so far?

Halesowen in the FA cup replay, A scorching hot day less than 48 hours after the players gave their all on the Saturday to earn a replay then to go to their place on the Monday and seeing that they had changed nearly their whole team highlighted the difference in playing budget and made me realise what a tough job it was going to be to get out of this league this season.

3. Moment of the season so far?

Hopefully that is yet to come ask me that question again in May.

4. Expectation for the second half of the Season?

To hopefully now string a good run of results together as it seems as soon as we start to get a head of steam we somehow either become victims of the weather and at times some strange decisions from officials.  If we can get that run of results I can see no reason why having played nearly every team in the league we can’t push for one of them play off positions.  Historically,(and I cant explain why) we have always done better in the second half of seasons and that is when we have made that concerted push for a playoff place.  The league is very competitive with only 9 points separating the teams from 5th to 13th a run of 2 or 3 games will put is firmly in contention.

“I would like to thank all of the supporters who come to watch and wish each and every one of you a happy and prosperous new year”

      1. Best performance of the season so far?

Ilkeston at The OVAL in the FA Trophy jumps to mind straight away but for me it was actually a draw away at Welwyn Garden City who were sitting 4th at the time of us playing them and were on a good run of results, we went there and came away with a 1 all draw.  It has proved a tough place for visiting teams and the dogged determination and defence qualities we showed in that game stand out for me.

  2. Worst performance of the season so far?

I wouldn’t say we have played bad for a complete game this season but we have played bad in parts of games for example the second half at Barton where we were in control at 2-0 and lost the second half due to silly individual errors.  You could say the same in the home games against both Bedford and Coleshill where we should have seen the game out and took all 3 points.

3. Moment of the season so far?

There have been a couple for me Reece Blackmores screamer of a goal here at The OVAL against Didcot. A couple of Luke Rowe’s freekicks have been class as well.  But for me its not been so much of a moment but seeing the attacking play as team we have worked on in training paying off with both Mitch and Khaellem on double figures for the season.

4. Expectation for the second half of the Season?

To get a decent run of results together and not drop needless points as ultimately come May the odd dropped point here and there could prove vital with the league being so competitive.

Andy Penny

      1. Best performance of the season so far?

Ilkeston definitely we went into the game with a game plan and we executed it to perfection and they fell into the traps that we set up and we came away with a 3-1 win.

  2. Worst performance of the season so far?

I would have to agree with Stu in Halesowen in the FA cup we just seemed to go into the game with no self belief at all but saying that we now seem to have a lot more belief in our own ability and are making teams worry more about us than us worry about them.

3. Moment of the season so far?

For me Luke Rowe’s freekick against Daventry was out of this world and I don’t think you will see a better one in this league all season.

4. Expectation for the second half of the Season?

As Stu said it is all about getting that decent run together and maintaining momentum with the league being so condensed a couple of good results will put us firmly in contention for the playoffs.  At the start of the season I said that we should be pushing for the playoffs and I still stand by that comment and firmly believe that that is where we will be come the end of the season.

Thanks to Stu, Jamie and Andy for their time in answering the questions.
