MATCH REPORT: Bedworth United 0-3 Rugby Town

Ruthless Rugby put three past Bedworth as The Greenbacks suffer home defeat to local rivals.

Bedworth nearly got off to the perfect start, nearly opening the scoring within the first minute. A brilliant whipped free kick from Grocott was attacked by Joseph Mugunda, but his headed bounced off the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

On 11 minutes, a misunderstanding between Rugby centre backs Mace and Francis was seized upon by Molyneux, who drove forwards and hit a cross come shot which was spilled by Liburd-Hines but no Bedworth player was to capitalise.

But on 18 minutes Rugby Town took the lead. The ball was worked out wide to Jordan Wilson, he took on Ryan Moore with ease and slotted past Lomax in the far corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Bedworth responded with a long range effort from Blackmore. Patient build up play in and around the Rugby box, Stone played the ball into Blackmore’s path and he let fly from range but was well tipped over by the keeper.

However on 23 minutes, Rugby made it 2-0. A brilliant freekick from Caine Elliott was headed by Wilson and his powerful header left Lomax stranded as the ball went in off the underside of the crossbar and the forward doubled his and Rugby’s tally for the afternoon.

Things got even worse for the Greenbacks as Rugby made it 3-0 on the 31st minute. A through ball from Silvano Obeng, was latched on by the late run of midfielder Ryan Sahota who rounded Sam Lomax and tucked the ball into an empty net. A disastrous half an hour for The Greenbacks.

It could have been even better for The Valley as a corner swung in by Elliott found an unmarked Kolodynski, his header drifted just wide of the post.

Despite some late pressure from Bedworth, the home side never looked like threatening Rugby’s keeper and the referee brought to an end a shocking first half for Bedworth.

Half Time- Bedworth United 0–3 Rugby Town

Bedworth could have pulled a goal back within the opening seconds of the second half. A defensive mix up for Rugby handed the opportunity for subsititute Kory Burke to race through on goal. Burke stumbled and struggled to get the ball out his feet before he could get a show away and The Valley keeper was there to smother The Greenbacks forward.

The Greenbacks had another chance to get at least a goal to put pressure on Rugby. A short corner routine resulted in Luke Rowe swinging in a dangerous cross which found Chris Cox but his header landed straight into the keepers arms.

Bedworth really struggled to create clear cut opportunities, which is credit to the way Rugby were set up and organised without the ball. The Valley were hard to break down and with a three goal lead were looking to counter at the right moment and they should have had a fourth on the 80th minute. Silvano Obeng did well to put the ball past Mugunda and he sprinted through on goal with only Lomax to beat. However the 6ft 9 keeper stood up well and made a strong save to deny the Rugby forward.

Moments later, the visitors were reduced top ten men. An out of control dangerous tackle on Luke Rowe by captain Barry Fitzharris left the referee no choice but to show him a straight red card.

The final action of the game came from a Bedworth set piece. New signing Stephen Morley whipped in a dangerous freekick but Chris Cox glanced his header wide of the post.

A very disappointing day for Bedworth United who are still yet to win a home game all season and feel a real opportunity to break that run today has slipped. Rugby Town were ruthless and clinical to make it nearly impossible for The Greenbacks to make a comeback.
