MATCH REPORT: Bedworth United 0-1 Lye Town

Bedworth experience another painful home defeat as late penalty sinks The Greenbacks to third consecutive home loss.

Jamie Lenton and Andy Penny led the Greenbacks from the bench today in Stuart Storer’s absence but it was a slow start to the afternoon’s encounter as both sides were turning the ball over very often, preventing either team getting a foothold of possession. The first chance did fall to Bedworth. Luke Rowe intercepted the ball deep into Lye Town’s territory and Kory Burke curled a long range attempt towards the top corner but was well tipped over by Lye keeper Bishop.

The Greenbacks had a half chance on the 30th minute. Blackmore did well to press the Lye midfield into a mistake and played a lobbed pass into the path of Molyneux on the left hand side. He weaved in and out and cut in on his stronger right foot but his shot bobbled into the path of the Lye goalkeeper.

In a half with limited goal scoring opportunities, Bedworth came close to taking the lead, The best phase of play involved Blackmore, Parrott and Moore. Blackmore laid it off to Parrott who played through the overlapping Ryan Moore who whipped in a dangerous cross towards the penalty spot and Jamie Molyneux got his head on the end of the cross and ball spiralled off the post and was cleared by Lye.

Half Time- Bedworth United 0–0 Lye Town

Bedworth started the half the brighter side with a  few half chances from Stone and Parrott from long range but The Greenbacks had a clear cut chance through Endall. A floated freekick from Grocott was met by Endall from 12 yards out but his header went straight into the hands of Bishop.

Another good chance for The Greenbacks went begging. Kory Burke stretched out his right foot from a brilliant drilled crossed by Luke Rowe but his Burke’s effort was again straight at the keeper.

Molyneux stung the palms of keeper Josh Bishop from another long range shot as Bedworth were looking to notch ahead and were dominating the game but just couldn’t create a clear cut chance.

In the space of 5 minutes Bedworth had two glorious chances. The first from Jamie Spiers, he ran directly goalbound and got his shot away but again straight at the keeper. The second chance, Molyneux did excellent to turn away from his man and played a reverse pass into Murphy’s path and was one on one with the keeper but Bishop stood up well to deny the forward.

However in the 87th minute, Lye Town were awarded a penalty. Lye Town forward Joe Palmer went past Cox but the Greenbacks defender brought him down with a cynical foul. Palmer dusted himself off and stepped up to the penalty. Palmer opened his body and sent Lomax the wrong way to make it 0-1 to Lye with what was their first chance on target the whole game.

The Greenbacks had a chance to snatch a late leveller. A great ball from Endall on the left found Murphy unmarked but he couldn’t get enough contact on the header and the balled drifted harmlessly wide.

A frustrating afternoon for The Greenbacks as the full time whistle sounded and yet another defeat at The Oval. A game where Bedworth should have collected all three points leave empty handed and still look for their first home win of the season.
