Bedworth United 0-1 Lichfield City

Bedworth’s first home league fixture of the seasons ends in defeat as Jude Taylor’s header was enough to take the three points back to Lichfield.

It was the visitors who started the brighter, an early Jack Edward’s attempt on goal as his 25 yard strike went just wide of Will Higlands goal.

It wasn’t long until Lichfield took the lead as Jude Taylor scored on the 11th minute. James Wilcock was in acres of space down the right hand side, he had time to pick out a dangerous cross that flew to the back post for Jude Taylor to head in from close range. 1-0.

Lichfield were denied by the post a few minutes later that denied them of a second goal. Jamie Spiers found some space in the 18 yard box and hit a quick shot that deflected off a defender and ricocheted off the post.

Bedworth only had their first real chance of the game on 27 minutes. A long kick forward from Highland was latched upon by Louis Monaghan who battled and shrugged off his defender to give him a yard of space but his half volley was a tame one and went wide for a goal kick.

George Dunkley had a decent chance go begging for the home side. The winger cut in on to his left foot but Dunkley scuffed his shot and didn’t test goalkeeeper Brendon Bunn.

The first half came to a close, and despite having a lot of possession, Bedworth had struggled to create any real clear chances to force the keeper into saves.

HALF TIME: Bedworth United 0-1 Lichfield City

The Greenbacks had the ball in the back of the net just 5 minutes after the restart. A ball was played down the line, where all of the Lichfield players had stopped, as they assumed the ball had gone out of play, however Louis Monaghan continued as the ref or linesman didn’t whistle/flag that the ball went out. Monaghan strode towards goal and nearly finished through the legs of Bunn. However after celebrations, the referee consulted with the linesman who had a great view of the incident, and decided not to award Bedworth the goal and the equaliser was unfortunately ruled out for The Greenbacks.

Bedworth lost a bit of momentum after that and Lichfield asserted some pressure back on the hosts. A long shot from Joe Haines went just wide and Williams Highland denied a one on one chance from Jamie Spiers.

Jude Taylor was by far the most dangerous player for the visitors and had numerous chances to double his and Lichfields tally for the evening.

The best of his second half chances coming from a left footed curling shot that just whistled wide of the far post.

Bedworth’s struggled in breaking down the Lichfield defence continued as the back 5 of the visitors remained resolute and managed to contain the frontline of The Greenbacks. Bedworth looked a little lost in front of goal and the pressure of trying to find an equaliser were making the players rush and force passes that fell in favour to Lichfield to deal with.

The Greenbacks did manage to rustle up one last chance in the 80th minute. Louis Monaghan’s constant pressure and fight forced an error from Leighton McMenemy, Monaghan collected the ball but was brought down just outside the box by the defender. Player/Coach Ashley Sammons lined up the free kick and bent the ball around the wall but Brendon Bunn was well positioned to parry away from danger.

The game ended with a couple of Lichfield counter attacks that went off target but the full time whistle brought an end to a disappointing performance from The Greenbacks, after an encouraging display at Racing club Warwick a few days ago.

The club are back in action on Saturday as we face Atherstone Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round.
